About

The Picture Book Place is the online thinking space of internationally published children’s author, Karen Collum. Karen has been reading, researching and analysing picture books for many years in order to understand just what makes great picture books so fantastic – partly because picture books are magical creations and partly because she wants to write great books herself.

After all, to be a good writer you need to read for enjoyment and skill development. Whether it’s the lyrical quality of a phrase, the right verb choice or the rising tension of a story arc, picture book writers can learn so much from the intentional reading of top-quality picture books.

The purpose of The Picture Book Place is to deconstruct amazing picture books from Australia and around the world and try and work out how the creators made something so spectacular. Karen believes understanding the technical side of writing picture books is something that is not only valuable but necessary in order to become a great picture book writer.

Karen also offers a Boutique Critique Service where she will apply all her hard-earned knowledge to your picture book manuscript and provide you with a thorough assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the work. Click on the tab for more information, but please note there are limited spaces available.

Karen is the author of four picture books (you can read all about them here). She grew up in Tasmania, dreamed about being a writer when she lived in Victoria, had her first book published while living in Queensland and now writes from her home in Ballarat in regional Victoria, tucked into a corner of the house she shares with her husband and four young children.

For more information about Karen and her work you can visit her at her homepage.
